Reginas Grocery & Deli (LES)

  • Reginas Grocery & Deli 27 Orchard Street New York, New York, 10002 United States (map)

One day only: Matt Alberts sets up his wet plate collodion studio at Regina's Grocery for a tintype portrait pop-up on Thursday, October 15th.

Tintypes are one of the oldest forms of photography, dating back to the 1850s, and Matt makes every one by hand the way it was done then. Each plate is poured with collodion, sensitized in silver, and exposed in a large wooden camera while it's still wet. Then it's developed on site, and you can watch your image appear on the metal in a matter of minutes. Sitting for a tintype asks you to hold still and be present, and the result has a depth and character that no phone or digital camera can reproduce.

What you take home is a single, original object. There's no negative and no file, so there are no copies and no reprints. The plate in your hand is the only one that will ever exist. It's a one-of-a-kind keepsake that will last for generations, and it makes a great gift too.

Come solo, bring a friend, your partner, or your family. Grab something from Regina's while you wait.

Walk-ups welcome, but spots are limited, reservations are recommended.
